Christmas in Lake Tahoe: The Ideal Winter Getaway

Updated: Dec 8, 2022

When it comes to choosing a Winter Getaway, there is nothing more magical than Christmas time in Lake Tahoe. With snow capped mountains, towering pines adorned in twinkle lights, and daily holiday festivities, Tahoe is sure to be the place for a special holiday experience. Here are some of our favorite things to do in Lake Tahoe during the holiday season:

Ice Skating

It doesn't get more 'Christmasy' than ice skating and hot cocoa. Visit one of our beautiful outdoor ice skating rinks surrounded by the California mountains. Whether you've never been on the ice or are a skating pro, the rink is fun for everyone. Our favorite place to ice skate is the Resort at Squaw Creek Ice Rink. Sip on a cup of hot chocolate and take in the views of Palisades Tahoe while skating on the resort's outdoor ice skating rink. It's perfection.

Sledding & Snow Play at Granlibakken

For those with little ones, you will especially appreciate Granlibakken. The sledding hill is so much fun! The snow play area is included in the price of sledding. As well, a saucer sled is included, so no need to bring your own. Kids under the age of 3 sled for free. Sledding tickets are $25 per person mid-week and $35 per person on weekends and holidays.

Holiday Fun at Palisades Tahoe Village (Formerly Squaw Village)

Palisades Tahoe | Alpine Meadows are geared up to welcome guests for a festive holiday season with a variety of activities and events for young and old, skiers and non-skiers. Events include skiing or riding with Santa, Disco Tubing and a New Year’s Eve fireworks show and torchlight parade, or celebrate under the stars with a moonlit snowshoe dinner tour. There is also great shopping, amazing restaurants, coffee shops and of course skiing and snowboarding.

Stroll through the Ginger Bread Village at Squaw Creek

The Gingerbread Village is a holiday fantasy, with an electric train touring the town, teddy bears nodding at tables with tea all the trimmings of an enchanted village. Facts about the Gingerbread Village at Resort at Squaw Creek: 222 hours of labor 440 lbs confectioners sugar 24 gallons molasses 10 lbs granulated ginger 250 large candy canes 600 small candy canes 30 lbs gummy bears. Open to the public and sure to sprinkle a little extra wonder in your holiday season.

When it comes to the holidays, there are some places that make the experience more special than others. Lake Tahoe is one of those places. We are thankful we can be a small part of helping you to create those experiences. If you are looking for a cozy cabin to spend the holiday season, be sure to check out Hygge Barn. Wishing you and yours a magical holiday season!
